In the first week of January, the first session of TN assembly would be usually held. This time, the session has been postponed and likely to be conducted in the third week of January after Pongal.
It was mentioned by an official belonging to the Secretariat that due to the Coronavirus pandemic the TN government had decided to postpone the first assembly session after Pongal by around 20th of January. The official announcement would be made after getting consent from the Governor of TN, Mr. Banwarilal Purohit.
It is known that the first assembly of TN commences with the address from the Governor on the first day. This would list the achievements of the government and would be followed by the debate on the address for the next couple of days. In the year 2018, the first assembly session in TN commenced on 8thJanuary and in 2019 it was on 2nd January. The first assembly session commenced on 6th January in 2020 is known. Some sources had mentioned that due to the threat of new variants from the UK there were discussions regarding whether to hold an assembly session this year or not.
The state government must present an interim budget before the elections and for this purpose the decision to hold an assembly session after Pongal was taken. The interim budget would be presented by the month of February. Since the social distancing cannot be followed in the assembly Hall in the Secretariat the assembly session would take place in the Kalaivanar Arangam just similar to the previous assembly session in September.
