The 3rd Phase of the Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) Project inking Velacherry and Parangimalai (St. Thomas Mount) commenced in 2008 at Rs. 495 Crores. Out f the total distance of 5 km, the track was laid for a distance of 4.5 km with 167 poles. However, there were issues in the acquisition of and when certain people objected to the same in the areas of Adambakkam and Thillai GangaNagar and filed a petition in the court. Because of this, the balance project work for 500 metres was kept pending. The project which should have been completed in 2010 itself, is still to be completed! |Because of this rather long gap of inaction, the prject6 cost has also increased.
Meanwhile, the above-mentioned and acquisition issue was solved with the case settled in the High Court. Subsequently, the public has been pressing for the early resumption of the project and fast completion of the same for the public service to start immediately.
In this scenario, the balance work of the project in section Velacherry-St. Thomas Mount (Parangimalai) is all set to resume.
The Southern Railway Officials shared in this regard:
”Issues which were major obstacles to the progress of this Adambakkam-Parangimalai section have now been solved. Out of 23 citizens, 15 citizens have been given compensation for the land acquisition. Action has been initiated for the release of the compensation to the remaining 8 citizens.
Presently, the activity of removing the buildings on the proposed track is in progress. The lands acquisition in the demolished area will be handed over by the State Government of Tami Nadu to the Railways. Subsequently, the track-laying work for 500 metres in the Adambakkam-Parangimalai section will commence. Tenders have been floated for this. |The balance work is planned to be completed in 18 months.
Meanwhile, the Railways Administration has now planned to extend the present Chennai Beach-Velacherry section up to Adambakkam. In this regard, the Southern Railway Officials shared: “The work on the Velacherry-Adambakkam section is nearing completion. The Safety Commissioner will be inspecting the same next month. Subsequently, it is planned to extend the service up to Adambakkam from March 2021.”
