The Tambaram Eastern Bypass project that would connect Rajakilpakkam with Peerkankaranai on the GST Road is making news now.  The residents belonging to south Chennai have urged the TN government to complete this project. For a decade, this project has been pending.

It is superb to mention here that when this project gets finished then traffic at Perungalathur would be eased and travel time to southern districts would be brought down.

Advantage for south Chennai residents:

By taking a right from Medavakkam, those living in places in south Chennai like Velachery, Nanganallur, Madipakkam, Thiruvanmiur, Adyar etc would be able to reach the bypass directly.

A resident of Madipakkam explained about how all the vehicles pass through Perungalathur and how it leads to heavy traffic congestion.

For the sake of helping the vehicles from outside Chennai to avoid the railway line and Irumbuliyur Junction, a bypass was proposed in Tambaram in CMDA first master plan 1979. In the year 2004, the TN government caught the attention of many when it sanctioned an amount of Rs 1 crore as token amount for land acquisition for the 9.3km long road between Peerkankaranai on the GST Road and Rajakilpakkam located on the Velachery-Tambaram Road.

Cause for the delay:

The delay in this project has been due to the issues in tacking encroachments and land acquisitions etc. It was brought out by a resident of East Tambaram that all throughout the day there were traffic jams at Perungalathur recently during the Pongal.  He added that Perungalathur and Tambaram get crowded for all festivals.

Various places the bypass road passes through are Madambakkam, Mappedu, Agarmthen, Thiruvanchery, and Nerkundram villages etc. In 2014, the first phase of the project got over with widening of 20ft stretch between Selaiyuir and Mappedu into 150 feet 6-lane highway at an amount of Rs 25 crores. Now, the second phase is being undertaken.
