Grand Thaippoosam festival today! - devotees thronging Lord Muruga temples from early morning!

Six temples in the State of Tamil Nadu are exclusively dedicated to Lord |Muruga and they are known as ‘Arupadai veedu’ - Pazhani, Swamimalai, Thirutthanigai, Thiruchendur, Thirupparankundram and Pazhamudhirsolai.

The day on which the star Poosam falls in the Tamil Calendar month of Thai is known as a sacred day called ‘Thaippoosam’ and celebrated in a grand manner in all the temples dedicated to Lord Muruga.

Accordingly, today (Thursday, 28th January) is the Thaippoosam Day and is being celebrated with great verve, devotion, and enthusiasm – generally, Thaippoosam falls on 28th January every year. Lord Muruga, known as the God of the Tamil people (’Thamizhkkadavul’), Thaippoosam is celebrated grandly not only in the State of Tamil Nadu but also in countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia with a large number of the Tamil population.

With the above situation, the State Government of Tamil Nadu has declared the Thaippoosam Day as a holiday from this year (2021) onwards. Today being the day, it is being celebrated with great pomp, enthusiasm, and devotion in all temples dedicated to Lord Muruga. Devotees have been thronging the Lord Muruga temples right from early morning!

This festival is especially more important in the Lord Muruga Temple located in Pazhani and hence, it is being celebrated at Pazhani in the grandest manner! It is celebrated at the Chennai Metro City Vadapalani temple with great verve as well!

As renovation works are in progress in this temple, permission has been denied to the devotees to carry ‘Paal-kudams’ (Milk pots) and Kavadis (a special item made of bamboo sticks and decorated carried usually by the male devotees). Devotees have been allowed entry via the South Temple Tower.

In the temple at Thirukkazhunkundram, 16 different holy and special Abhishekhams were performed for the Lord Muruga and His Consorts. Devotees have been thronging at the Thiruchendur Lord Muruga Temple as well! Theerthavaari was performed early morning today. Permission has been granted to allow devotees for Darshan of Lord Muruga from 6.00 AM to 4.00 PM.
