Residents in many parts of the city, especially areas such as Perumbur and Kolathur, have complained about the mix of sewage in drinking water. Sewage seeps through the drinking water lines when they leak from the badly maintained drainage system.
‘Even lodging a complaint with Metrowater is a hassle. When officials are apprised of contamination, they are reluctant to take action. When they do find a solution, things return to square one within no time’, says a resident of Perambur. ‘Whenever water pressure goes down, sewage enters water pipes. Despite having a water connection, we are completely dependent on canned water.’ A resident of Kolathur says, ‘(We) did not receive potable water for more than 20 days in May. Every alternate month, the lines get blocked and the sewage overflows and mixes with borewell water. Metrowater has failed to find a solution despite repeated complaints.’
