Many vehicles have been using the stretch between Sholinganallur and Siruseri in Chennai that has got many IT companies and colleges etc. This has often resulted in heavy traffic congestion here creating issues.

Now, tenders have been floated by the Chennai Metro Rail limited or CMRL for the 10km elevated stretch from Sholinganallur to SIPCOT in Siruseri along the IT expressway or OMR. In another 3 years the works would be completed. Truth is that CMRL does not want to delay the start of the work.

Information collected is that there would be metro stations in places like Sholinganallur Lake, Sri Ponniamman Temple, Sathyabama University, St. Joseph`s College, Semmencheri, Gandhi Nagar, Navalur, Siruseri and SIPCOT 1 and 2.

An officer belonging to CMRL expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how within 6 to 7 years the entire project would be wrapped up. He hinted about completing the stretch in another 3 years.

The mistakes that were made in the phase -1 have been taken into account and these mistakes would not be repeated again. There might be lots of patronage from the IT professionals at this stretch. It was brought out that in the first phase itself the majority of passengers belonged to the IT sector. It was pointed out by the CMRL official that the first priority would be Madhavaram-CMBT and Madhavaram- Taramani sections. They both cover a distance of 52kms. Financial assistance would be provided by JICA for this work.

For the purpose of starting construction simultaneously at various locations in Chennai, CMRL has been floating tenders. Point is that phase-2 project runs for 188.9km with as many a s128 metro stations. Once CMRL begins the work, daily commuting on this stretch would be a challenge to the public for 3 years. As per the road users it was clear that efficient traffic management plans would be needed.
