Launched: Installation of smart meters to record the precise energy consumption!

TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation) has launched the installation of smart energy meters which will not require any person to read and record the power/energy consumption in the T Nagar locality of the Chennai Metro City.
TANGEDCO has installed energy meters at the residences, factories, and commercial complexes to record the power consumption. The Staff of TANGEDCO visits these installations to record the reading of the meter on the power/energy consumed from the previous reading.
This system entails a few mistakes such as not visiting on the due date, failing to take the precise reading, etc. To prevent these errors, TANGEDCO had decided to install smart meters which would not require anyone to take readings in these areas. In the new system, a software which provides a recording of details such as failure to visit on the required date, taking wrong readings, the exact date on which the energy consumption must be recorded, etc., would be installed on the meter and this would be linked to the server with the telecommunication. With this system installed, the energy meter will be automatically taken on the set date.
In the 1st Phase of the series of installation of the smart energy meters, this work has been taken up in the T Nagar locality in the Chennai Metro City for 1.41 Lakhs electricity connections. This operation has been set up at Rs. 7.45 Crores for the required infrastructure and the software.
Smart meters are to be procured at a cost of Rs. 137 Crores. The statistics recorded in the smart meter will be transmitted through radio frequency waves.
hough the software work had been completed, the installation of smart meters got delayed. Now, the installation of smart meters has commenced.
In the 1st Phase, installation of 10000 smart meters has been taken up on a war-footing.
TANGEDCO has emphasised that the Chief Engineer of the North Chennai Region to submit the weekly progress to the TANGEDCO Headquarters on the specific time regularly without fail!
