In the Tiruvallur district is present the fifth water reservoir Thervoy Kandigai and it was inaugurated in the month of November. This reservoir had reached its full capacity on Wednesday for the first time and is brimming with water. For storing the drinking water for the requirements of Chennai residents, the Thervoy Kandigai reservoir was created.

In the year 1944, Poondi reservoir was added as Chennai city’s major water source and after 77 years Thervoy Kandigai was created. The full capacity of 500 mcft was touched in this latest water reservoir and it also receives a minimum of 5cusecs of Krishna water from AP. This was according to the officials belonging to the WRD. As the other reservoirs also have adequate storage of water, Thervoy Kandigai reservoir is now used as buffer source. As per a WRD officer it was clear that even before it was inaugurated the water body had storage due to rainwater flow from the catchment areas. Krishna water contributed to the remaining storage and flood water runoff was responsible for the storage of about 200 mcft.

Information is that when the storage level in Poondi reservoir goes down then CMWSSB would draw water from the Thervoy Kandigai reservoir and convey it to the KP or Kandaleru- Poondi canal through pipeline. From there, water would flow into the Poondi reservoir. It must be taken into account that the state entry point of this KP canal in Uthukottai in Tiruvallur district continues to get a minimal amount of Krishna water of 56 cusecs and some of it is being conveyed to Poondi reservoir.

To avoid cattle entering, the confluence point of the canal and Poondi reservoir has been secured with a compound wall now. The official later threw light on how since September 2020 Chennai has received 7.5tmct of water and it was the highest quantum in the recent years. In this summer, the reservoirs that supply drinking water to Chennai have enough water and it would meet the demands of the residents. It must be noted that repair work has been going on to repair KP canal lining in vulnerable stretches for a distance of 8km between Uthukottai and Poondi.
