In the first phase of the two-phase project to plant Nochi saplings in the city, 5 lakh saplings will be planted soon. The Mayor of Chennai Saidai Duraisamy had announced that a total of 10 lakh nochi saplings will be planted in the city to keep away mosquitoes.
According to officials, 3 lakh saplings will be planted along the shore of water bodies and the rest will be distributed among households in 15 zones in the city.
‘The nochi plant`s leaves are supposed to have medicinal properties that release more oxygen into the surrounding atmosphere. According to the siddha scriptures, the leaves also have a smell that drives away mosquitoes and flies, keeping vector control operations eco-friendly. The plant roots are known to be rich in oxygen content, which enriches the soil’, said an official press statement.
