Now, many elderly people could get their lives back and could live a normal life again by this superb procedure!!

On Tuesday, 16th March 2021, doctors at the highly famous Apollo hospitals performed beck-to-back minimally invasive heart procedures to plug the leaks in the heart valves. A new mitraclip was used by the doctors and they saved the lives of 4 elderly persons who had severe heart failures. This has now caught the attention of many.

It was pointed out by Dr. Sai Satish, senior interventional cardiologist at the Apollo Hospitals, that the patients had malfunction of their mitral valve. It must be noted that the valve monitors blood flow from left atrium to the ventricle. There are times when the valve does not close properly and due to this the blood does not reach the ventricle. The blood would get pumped into the lungs and could lead to choking. He spoke about how there would not be any need for the open heart surgery as a device Mitraclip would repair the leaking mitral valve present in the heart. The 4 patients were in the late 70s and late 80’s and are now doing well after the procedure.

To enable the valve to continue its function, a clip is used in the western countries. Minimally invasive procedure is used to implant this clip in the patients. This was also brought to light by Dr. Sai Satish.

It was later highlighted by Suneetha Reddy, MD of Apollo hospitals that it was important to recognise the need for this procedure. She threw light on the hospital that had successfully conducted as many as13 such procedures. The highest level of team work has been the reason for the tremendous success of this Mitraclip procedure and this was according to the vice-chairman of Apollo Hospitals, Preetha Reddy.
