The days are becoming hot now and it is the middle of March month. The residents of Chennai are trying various ways to quench their thirst. Over the last 2 weeks, the business of water melons has increased tremendously in Chennai. It was brought out by Mr. S. Srinivasan, president of Chennai Fruit Commission Agent Sangam in Koyambedu that they receive 50 tonnes to 100 tonnes of water melons every day from Andhra Pradesh and from few TN districts like Chengalpet etc. He added that in the last 10 days all the stocks were sold and the customers returned again to buy new stocks. The price of water melon is between Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg. The truth is that the retail price has not crossed Rs 25 per kg.
The most popular types of water melons in Chennai now are Namdhari (green striped), Vishal (red pulp and yellow rind), Kiran (dark red pulp) and this is out of 16 varieties. As per a water melon seller, from Southwest Boag Road, normally these 3 types get sold very fast in the summer seasons. The demand has been high and the prices of these watermelons remain the same as last year.
He then threw light on how after the Covid-19 pandemic he gave more than 27 tonnes of this fruit to the people and how he suffered a loss of Rs 1.2 lakhs. The sales of water melons have picked up now and it will improve further in April. It must be noted that there are superb benefits of consuming water melon juice because they are rich in vitamin C plus minerals.
