The number of beneficiaries receiving Covid-19 vaccine in Chennai and in TN has not increased even after the Centre deciding to vaccinate those above the age of 45. It is now learnt that limited availability of vaccine stocks has been the main reason for slow vaccination. There are also many who have avoided getting vaccinated for the fear of catching Covid-19 infection at the vaccination centres.

It must be taken into note that on 1st April 2021 (first day after those above the age of 45 included as beneficiaries) a total of 82992 persons got vaccinated. Truth is that 34254 persons above the age of 45 persons got vaccinated but the overall beneficiaries did not witness any significant surge.

The vaccinations were getting over in the first few sessions itself forcing them to reschedule for another day. This was according to a large number of persons who went to get vaccinated on Thursday and Friday. A Velachery based resident spoke about how the vaccines got over at a private vaccination centre on Friday and how she was asked to come on Saturday for vaccination. Increase in the vaccine demand has been given as the reason. As more number of persons have been getting vaccinated at this private hospital, the officials have requested for more number of daily vaccines.

There are also many who fear getting Coronavirus infection while visiting the vaccination centres and this has resulted in low vaccination in Chennai. There are also struggles to find Covaxin in some private hospitals and this was due to the fact that most of the stocks are being reserved for administering a second dose of the vaccine. A resident of Alwarpet pointed out that he was scared to go to the government hospitals for vaccination due to over crowds there due to increase in the number of fresh Covid-19 cases now.
