It would be an amazing experience to walk during the night time around the water bodies and for the south Chennai residents this would become a reality.
Last year, 3 water bodies in south Chennai were renovated and it is now said that these 3 water bodies can be used for walking in the night time.
Puzhuthivakkam Lake, Madipakkam Lake and Arthanareeswarar temple pond in Nanganallur have been renovated by the GCC. High mast lights and lamp posts would be erected by the GCC along the walker’s path in these 3 water bodies at a cost of Rs 50 lakhs. The residents of these places have been demanding the lighting of the walker’s paths around the water bodies for many years is well known.
It must be taken into account that many residents were unhappy about the walkway around the lake at Puzhuthivakkam and the one at Ayyappa Nagar because of the fact that the space was misused by some persons for drinking etc. It is a common sight for the morning walkers to see alcohol bottles thrown all over the place. Truth is that the residents could feel happy that GCC has planned to light up the walker’s space around the lake as they would be able to use the space for walking in the night time.
A resident belonging to Puzhuthivakkam spoke about how the anti-social elements used to occupy the walking space and drink. The space would be full of liquor bottles and cigarette buds etc.
Now, one stretch of the lake at Ayyappa Nagar in Madipakkam has been well lit and the walkers` space is being used by the residents. Soon, the dimly lit portion along Karthikeyapuram would be illuminated and for the sake of the residents and others. This would allow the people to walk plus the kids would also be able to play. In the year 2018, restoration of the lake in Puzhuthivakkam began and Rs 2.4 crore was used from the Smart City project. It was towards the end of 2019 only a footpath was laid around the lake for walking. This was according to some residents.
