The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) will hold a meeting on Wednesday to take a decision on the razing down of the Royapuram Station. The Station was to be brought down for developmental work but has faced opposition from archeologists. The building of the Station is classified as a Grade I heritage building. Grade-I buildings have national or historical importance, embodying excellence in architectural style, design, technology and material usage. They may be associated with a great historical event, personality, movement or institution. No interventions would be permitted either on the exterior or interior unless it is necessary in the interest of strengthening, and prolonging, the life of the building.

However, the State Government has not yet notified the list of heritage buildings and so the Southern Railways has the authority to demolish the building.
