Soon, 3 localities in Chennai would become models for waste management!!
In 7 of the 15 zones of GCC, Urbaser-Sumeet has taken over the garbage collection, transport and cleaning of streets etc is well known. It is now said that this company has launched an initiative to transform 3 localities into models for waste management. These localities included Lock Nagar, major parts of Raja Annamalai Puram and parts of Moores Road.
Preparatory work is going on in Moores Road now and in other 2 localities initiatives have been launched already. It is now revealed that the initiatives would not only showcase 100percent segregation at source, composting and recycling were possible but also would help to understand key challenges and possible solutions. By this, the same could be emulated in other localities too. This was according to some representatives belonging to this company.
It is well known that Lock Nagar is a locality with low income groups and R.A. Puram is a locality with high income groups. It was mentioned by Mr. V.R. Hari Balaji head of information, communication and education, Urbaser- Sumeet that both had their challenges. He shed light on how in both these localities a section of population complying with segregation at source or willing to do so and another section that was reluctant little.
Under this initiative, the entirety of Lock Nagar having 10 TNSCB apartment blocks has been brought now. Information is that in R.A. Puram 7 main roads, 3 cross roads and Canal Bank Road have been included. There are several phases in this initiative like empathise, ideate, prototype, test and launch phases. It was later pointed out by Mr. Hari Balaji hinted that currently the company is in prototype phase and practices would be designed to suit a particular locality.
It must be noted that in Lock Nagar that plastic sachets waste was an issue as people here buy a lot of groceries. Those residents here who returned back these plastic sachets to the local grocers would be rewarded and talks are going on for this. The residents would be able to buy something in exchange for the plastic sachets.
As per Mr. T.N. Srinivas, vice president of Raja Annamalai Puram Resdient’s Association or RAPRA it was clear that an important concern in the locality was the mixing of garbage in battery operated vehicles or BOV and on roadside bins. The issue has been informed to Urbaser-Sumeet already.
