Not only the public is avoiding the highly popular Koyambedu market complex in Chennai now due to the increase in the restrictions due to more number of covid-19 cases, but also the retailers have been preferring the online companies for purchasing vegetables.

Mr P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Market’s Association, spoke about how there is now drastic fall in the business of nearly 50% for both wholesale as well as for retail vendors at KWMC. Business here was resumed in a phased manner is well known to us.

The vendors purchase the veggies directly from the online companies and sell to the customers without coming to the market. This has led to steep fall in the business now. This was also according to Mr. Sukumaran. He added that the vendors prefer this type of business as there are many restrictions now due to the rise in the Covid-19 cases in Chennai.

The ease that is associated with the online selling route has made many vendors to prefer this type. The second crop is set to arrive at the Chennai city and this would increase the wholesale vegetable prices by 10percent in the coming week. Truth is that the prices were volatile in the last week due to festivals interrupting the supply.
