The news that the southern suburbs of Chennai do not have even a single containment zone has been the subject of discussion for many.

It is known to us that GCC has turned 1100 odd streets into Covid-19 containment zones in Chennai. The Chennai city’s southern suburbs do not have a single containment zone now. Till Monday morning, Tambaram and Pallavaram municipalities have blocked entry and exit of just 34 independent houses with 3 or more cases. The Covid-19 surge has been brought under the control of these because of the micro-containment plan along with aggressive testing and vaccination drives etc. this has been mentioned by some authorities.

It is learnt that these 2 local bodies together have 1055 people undergoing Covid-19 treatment and it is just 15% of the cases in the Chengalpet district. In 2020, these 2 localities had one in every third active cases. To help those in the micro-containment zones, a group of volunteers have been roped in. This was highlighted by Mr. C. Mathivannan, Pallavaram municipal commissioner. He added that the Covid-19 surge has been controlled at the house level and due to that focus on the vaccination drive was better.

It must be taken into account that in the last 2 months 80,000 persons were tested for Covid019 infection and 11000 have been given vaccinations in the Pallavaram municipal area.

Information is that in the western suburbs Avadi has turned 23 streets into containment zones in addition to 30 micro-containment zones. There are 5to 10 cases on average here.
