For many years, the work to widen the 10.5km suburban stretch of ECR from Thiruvanmiyur to Akkarai has been delayed but not anymore!!

Within this financial year, work to widen this stretch would start. This was confirmed by a source belonging to the Highways Department. The department mentioned that the road has been widened into 6 lanes wherever it was possible. It is now revealed that the land acquisition has been made and payments issued to the property owners. By the end of the financial year, nearly 80% of the widening work would be completed.

In the year 2005, widening of the stretch in ECR was first announced is well known to us. It must be noted that an amount of Rs 10 crores was sanctioned by the government.

The four lane road remained at that width in most of the stretches and this was because of continuous delays in acquisition of land plus due to court cases etc. It is learnt that cost would be under Rs 10 crores for widening and constructing SWD and footpaths on both sides. A resident belonging to Neelankarai spoke about how the road was not widened for a long time. The traffic got slowed down in these areas. The pedestrians and local traffic has been preventing the vehicle users from going beyond the speed of 40kmph here. The resident finally mentioned that elevated road from Thiruvanmiyur to RTO office to be extended till Akkarai.

Palavakkam has been buzzing with activities with the Highways Department building SWD for a length of 1.5km to avoid flooding.
