Not only the Chennai residents are facing issues due to rise in the Covid-19 cases now but also due to rise in the temperature levels!!
It has been predicted by IMD that the humidity levels in Chennai would increase during the day time. This would make the residents feel more sweaty and sticky even when they go out for a short walk to a shop at the street corner. It has been revealed that the persistent flow of moisture laden easterly winds onto the coastal places of TN including Chennai would be the factor for the rise in humidity. According to IMD, the RH would be 50% to 70% in the next 48 hours. The RH levels would remain high till the end of April and this was according to some private weather forecasters.
There would be some light rains at the month end and this would bring some respite from the high humidity. In Chennai for the next 2 days, IMD has predicted temperature to hover around a maximum of 36 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 28 degrees Celsius. The skies would be partly cloudy in Chennai.
The residents of Chennai might have to put up with the unusual sweating despite the average temperature of 34.6 degrees in April plus incoming winds making sure that the mercury might not rise a degree or two above the normal. It has been mentioned by the IMD that RH is hovering around 50% to 90% over coastal and the adjoining districts in TN. Truth is that because of this the actual temperature is likely to be perceived more than normal by 4 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius.
The cyclonic circulation at an altitude of 1.5km over south TN and adjoining areas has been pushing strong and persistent of easterly- south easterly winds into coastal areas throughout the day.
Information is that since the sea surface temperature is high it would bring in more moisture into the land and this would result in high humidity levels. This could lead to a situation where the temperatures would be normal and still we would feel the heat and it is called a heat index. This was according to Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre. It is learnt that this might be the condition throughout this summer season. He concluded that this wind pattern might be there in Chennai till the end of April.
