New bridge to come up near Ampa mall

The wider bridge will be built across the river Cooum at Poonamallee High Road. The highways department, which has floated tenders for the project, said that the bridge will be built near Ampa Skywalk mall and will help with smoother traffic flow.

‘The bridge, at road level, will be at a height of 9.5m from the riverbed and will be 47m long.  The department plans to build a 10-lane bridge as opposed to the six-lane road. The old bridge could be dismantled. We will take a formal decision on this only after we finish constructing the new one… Another bridge to replace the old one is also a possibility, if the traffic conditions warrant it… The plan and funding have received administrative sanction. However, we have to find the right contractor. The last tender did not attract too many bidders, forcing the department to float the tender again. Once the contractor is chosen, the highways department should not take more than year to build the bridge…. There are problems of land acquisition and traffic diversions, but these are issues that we usually have to deal with in most of our projects’, said an official.
