Chennai Metro Rail has announced that feasibility effort on the Light-Rail-Service Project between Tambaram-Velacherry is nearing completion and the feasibility report will be presented soon!
There are 3 categories of suburban electric train services in the Chennai Metro City – suburban electric train from Chennai Beach to Tambaram and Chengalpattu and beyond, MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) between Chennai Beach and Velacherry and the Metro Rail Services presently operating in 2 corridors. As such, it had been announced last year that the 4th category - Light Rail - will also commence!
In response to some queries raised by a citizen Dayananda Krishnan, Chennai Metro Rail has given different replies regarding the commencement of Light Rail Services
It has informed that Rs. 26 Crores have been spent so far for the preparation of a feasibility report for the 15.5 km distance Light Rail Services between Tambaram and Velacherry. Chennai Metro Rail has also informed that Light Rail Service will operate on an elevated corridor.
It has further informed that the project is devised to link the present Stations at Tambaram and Velacherry. After the feasibility report is ready and submitted, the details regarding the number of stations will be released!
