J. Jayalaithaa, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, criticized the Centre for the rise in natural gas prices. She said that the move will harm the fertilizer and power industries.

‘(The Centre has) succumbed to pressure from a corporate while doubling the price of natural gas from April 1, 2014 resulting in pricing natural gas at 8.4 per million metric British thermal unit (mmBtu) dollar, up from the current 4.2 dollar. The decision will have serious cosequences for fertiliser and power utilities running on natural gas… Natural resources like natural gas belong to the people of the country and they cannot be allowed to be swindled in the guise of `policy. The tenure of the Congress-led UPA Government since it assumed power in 2009 (has) been marked by policy paralysis as it did not take any decision for improving the economy or the welfare of the people’, she said.
