Chennai’s MTC (Metropolitan Transport Corporation) will be ordering new buses from private commercial vehicles companies such as Ashok Leyland. Reports say that the MTC has ordered 2610 buses.
‘Every year, the government purchases around 3,000 buses to expand the fleet, It`s too early to say which corporation will get how many buses’, said an MTC official.
However, there have been many complaints about bad maintenance of the existing fleet. ‘There is a severe shortage of technical staff. While a ratio of 1.25 staff to each bus is to be maintained, the ratio is now only 0.68. Spare parts are also not bought regularly’, said M. Chandran, State Transport Employee Union CITU President.
