There is more than 70% of water storage in the city lakes and due to this the Metro Water or CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has increased the water supply to more than 900 MLD now.
It was later pointed out by a senior officer belonging to CMWSSB that from 15th of August 2021 water supply has been increased to more than 900 MLD. He added that the move was initiated on a trial basis to see whether the pipeline network of Chennai was equipped to carry large amounts of water. On Thursday, 19th August, Chennai city received 901.46 MLD water. Point is that on the same day in 2020 Chennai received just 700.39 MLD water.
It has been confirmed by the data from the metro water department that the 5 lakes that supply drinking water to Chennai have 8429 mcft of water on Thursday. This was 4042 mcft higher than the storage in 2020. From Krishna River, Poondi Lake receives water is well known. Information is that Poondi Lake had 2241 mcft of water yesterday. It is learnt that the increased drinking water supply to Chennai city would continue for some days. Chennai city has got an actual requirement of 1000 to 1100 MLD of water per day.
Truth is that Chennai city received just around 400 MLD of water when it was under severe drought. On Thursday, out of 901.46 MLD of water that was supplied, 856.57 MLD of water was supplied to the houses and the rest of water was supplied to various industries, bulk consumers etc.
