Those residents living in and around near Theradi in Thiruvottiyur in Chennai could feel delighted by this piece of news!!
It has been six months since the phase 1 extension project of the metro was inaugurated. Truth is that the construction work of one of its stations is not yet finished. It is known that in the 9km stretch that connects Washermenpet and Wimco Nagar the Theradi station at Tiruvottiyur could not be opened. The metro trains have been passing through Theradi without stopping.
The superb piece of news is that the construction is nearing completion and it will be over in another 2 months. This was according to some officials belonging to CMRL. They have hinted that the Theradi metro station would open by the end of October. Information is that the signalling software would be ready by early October and Theradi metro station would start functioning.
Land acquisition issues plus some changes in the design has led to the delay in the opening of Theradi metro station. It was later brought out by another official belonging to CMRL that initially acquisition of land was difficult and later design change was challenging.
Point to be noted is that in this stretch metro stations would be present at Washermenpet, Theagaraya College, Tondiarpet, New Washermenpet, Tollgate, Kaladipet, Tiruvottiyur and Wimco Nagar. The commuters have been using the phase 1 extension quite well and every day more than 10000 persons travelling through it. Improving the last mile connectivity would increase the patronage and this was according to some sources.
