Campaign on rain water harvesting starts

Chennai’s Metro Water has started its campaign to educate residents about the importance of rain water harvesting. This annual campaign usually begins two months before the monsoon, but has started early this year. ‘This time we are sticking posters with pictures and graphics on maintaining rain water harvesting structures. We know the campaign is effective — before it, only 35% of structures are maintained; this increases to 75% after the campaign’, said an official.

‘Several systems have been used to save rain water, but not all are effective. For example , saving roof water in borewells has not been effective. Borewells have four or six-inch pipes. This makes filters a necessity as debris may block the passage of water. Dug wells are better than borewells as they are economical and help save large quantities of water in a short period. I have connected the terrace to a traditional well without using filters in 200 buildings. There is no need for filters if the terrace is cleaned once in May and once in September. It`s simple and effective’, said a rain water harvesting enthusiast.
