What happened to these 300 plus streets in Chennai suddenly yesterday despite less rain?

Compared to last week, the amount of rain received yesterday was less but that hasn’t stopped the streets in Chennai getting water logged or flooded. It is now said that more than 300 streets in Chennai had water logging yesterday.

As of 6pm on Thursday, water loggings were cleared from as many as 72 streets in Chennai. Total of 328 streets were inundated in the rains that lashed yesterday. This was according to the data from Chennai Corporation. Till late on Thursday night, many workers from GCC were working tirelessly to remove water stagnation from the remaining 256 streets from as many as 59 localities in Chennai.

Streets in places like T. Nagar, Jawajar Nagar, AGS Colony etc were flooded with water. In Seethammal Road in Mandaveli, GCC had placed 4 motor pumps to suck water as the place was vulnerable. Severe flooding areas in Chennai have been identified by the civic body to mitigate the flood situation in Chennai.  

According to Mr, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai Corporation commissioner, at 769 identified places motor pumps were placed to pump out rain water immediately. In last week’s very heavy rains, as many as 778 streets and roads in Chennai were flooded and many streets were under the water for a week also. It must be noted that on Wednesday also water logging from last week’s rains persisted in 10 streets in Chennai.

The GCC has been making a huge effort to make the lives of the residents easier now after the rains. They have removed 18 trees that have fallen on the road for the sake of the public. The Chennai Corporation commissioner made his presence felt in several places in Chennai to witness the flood mitigation works. 

It was later mentioned by an officer belonging to GCC that workers pumped out stagnant water from the streets in Chennai as the rainfall was intermittent throughout yesterday. Till Friday morning, the workers and machines would be at disposal. Information is that as many as 54 boats were kept ready in areas like Ram Nagar in Velachery etc. Food packets were distributed to those in the water logged areas in Chennai.
