The important news that has emerged out is that within families Coronavirus infection has been spreading more now.  It must be noted that the daily count of fresh Covid-19 cases have been above 100 consistently in Chennai. It is worthy to note that the majority of patients who have tested positive were within family and extended contacts.

On 17th December, the number of daily cases was 127 and on 21st December it was 132. The number of daily cases rose to 145 on 23rd of December. According to an official, nearly 30% to 40% cases were index cases and the majority of daily cases were family based and extended contacts.

He spoke about how the travel history and contact history of index cases were undertaken extensively in the same manner just like how tracing and testing the family members and extended contacts were carried out on the person who had tested positive for Omicron variant. Recently, a cluster occurred at a private lab where 12 staff tested positive for Covid-19 infection. Truth is that as a part of screening and testing for Omicron variant, GCC had traced and tested as many as423 extended contacts belonging to a particular case.

In the zone 1(Thiruvottiyur), zone 2(Manali) and zone 3 (Madhavarm) belonging to northern Chennai, there were not many cases reported.  Cass in two digits was reported from zones belonging to central and southern regions. As many as 409 streets in Chennai have active cases and this was till 22nd December.

The chances of transmission of the Covoid-19 infection from one person to another are high in the markets. Hence, orders have been issued to tighten surveillance and enforcement in the markets etc. this was pointed out by Mr. J. Radhakrishan, health secretary. He threw light on how when the positive cases were identified then the extended contacts must also be covered. It is learnt that the awareness in Chennai is high but it has not led to any change in the behavior. The need to improve communication was stressed for the sake of behavioral change. He concluded that around 6.5 to 7 lakh persons are due for the second vaccination dose but they have been postponing.
