The Metrological Department has forecasted that heavy rain is expected to lash north Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, over the next two days because of a weak low pressure area over Bay of Bengal. A weak low-pressure area that has formed in the region near Kolkata, termed the head Bay of Bengal, has brought heavy rain to the Rayalaseema and Telangana regions in Andhra Pradesh. Because of this, , heavy rain pounded the city (18.6mm) and its suburbs (41.7mm) on Friday, surprising commuters. This same pressure zone, coupled with cyclonic activity in the upper atmosphere, had also caused rainfall in the northern parts of Tamil Nadu.

The rain on Friday and the heavy showers forecast for the next two days indicate that the city could get more rain from the southwest monsoon than it normally receives.
