At the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai, the vegetables are sold at very low prices now.
It is known that the price of vegetables has been reducing in the market for 3weeks now and this will be there for another month. Continued increase in the arrival of vegetables to the market has been the reason for the reduction in the vegetable prices. The surprising piece of information is that in Chennai tomatoes were sold for Rs 7 per kilo.
In the months of November and December, TN received heavy rains and it damaged the vegetable cultivation in the state. This led to an increase in the vegetable prices and tomatoes were sold for Rs 140 per kilo also in the Chennai market. Now, the wholesale rate is just 5percent of that.
It was revealed by Mr. Tiyagarajan, an association leader of Koyambedu wholesale market, that after the rains damaged the cultivation the farmers cultivated vegetables in large areas. The farmers had a good harvest due to the presence of enough water. Earlier, 300 lorry’s brought vegetables to Koyambedu market and now 600 lorries bring vegetables to the market.
Currently, 600 tonnes of vegetables arrive at the market. The reduction in the vegetable prices was witnessed not only for tomatoes but also for other vegetables too. Just 2 months back, drum sticks were sold at Rs 300 per kilo and now it is sold for Rs 60 per kilo. In the Chennai market now, onions and small onions are being sold around for Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kilo. Potatoes are being sold for Rs 22 per kilo and carrots for Rs 25 per kilo. The cost of ladies finger is Rs 20 per kilo and cost of beetroot, brinjal etc is Rs 10 per kilo. Mangoes are being sold for RS 60 to Rs 70 per kilo now.
