The process of setting up of Urban Health Wellness Centres or UHWC by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has started now. It is learnt that these UHWC would be set up under National Urban health Mission or NUHM. By this work done by GCC, the Chennai city would have more free clinics for the public. In future, 200 wellness centres would be set up in all the 200 divisions belonging to Chennai city.
Information gathered is that during the FY 2022-23 as many as 140 wellness centres would be established in the Chennai city and the remaining wellness centres would be set up in the next FY 2023-24. This was according to an official belonging to GCC. He added that a tender process has already started for some of the centres. Health issues like fever, cough and various other minor ailments would be treated at these centres. It is well known that urban primary health centres provide neonatal care but these urban health wellness centres would not provide neonatal care.
Greater Chennai Corporation plays a huge role in running as many as149 UPHCs, 19 urban community health centres and one communicable diseases hospital in Chennai. It is noteworthy that the community health centres and one communicable diseases hospital functions for 24 hours. In Chennai city, recently GCC launched 40 polyclinics that would function during the evening hours.
The GCC official later made it clear that wellness centres, PHCs and community health centres would be operating in every neighbourhood in diversified places to cover the population.
