Within 2 months in 2 phases, 46 traffic signals present in Chennai that are not working properly would either be rectified or replaced by the Chennai traffic police.
Additional Commissioner of Police Traffic, Mr Kapil Kumar Saratkar explained that the traffic signals have been switched for nearly 2 years due to the Coronavirus pandemic situation. He mentioned that the normalcy had returned back in January and the process of renewal of Annual Maintenance Contract or AMC was initiated. In the beginning there were as many as 412 traffic signals in Chennai.
It must be remembered that the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate was split into 2 and Avadi commissionerate and Tambaram commissionerate were formed. Now, there are as many as 312 traffic signals under the purview of the Chennai traffic police. Forty six traffic signals have been identified by the traffic police department to be under repair and this also included traffic signals present in Avadi commissionerate and Tambaram commissionerate etc. For the execution of infrastructure work, traffic signals have to be dismantled in 34 junctions.
It was brought to light by a senior police officer belonging to Traffic Planning Wing that some traffic signals under repair were identified at Mahalingapuram-South Usman Road Junction, Gandhi nagar 4th Main Road in Adyar, GNT Road of Kavangarai Junction and CTH Road-Sidco Nagar Junction in Villivakkam etc.
At 34 junctions, traffic signals have been dismantled and these included Peters Road-Anna Salai for metro rail work, Anna Main Road-MGR Nagar Junction of K.K. Nagar for SWD work, Nesapakkam and Vijayanagar Junction in Velachery for construction of flyovers. According to the additional commissioner of police, traffic, Chennai it was clear that 46 traffic signals that were under repair would be rectified in 2 phases within 2 months as TN government has allotted Rs 2 crores from Road Safety Fund.
He threw light on how in the first phase 23 traffic signals would be repaired for which the contract has been awarded. Point is that tenders have been called for the remaining 23 traffic signals and a contractor would be selected soon. It is now said that additional traffic enforcement personnel would be posted in junctions where signals were removed.
