Several facilities have been introduced to ensure the safety of the women passengers in the buses. In this aspect, one more facility has been introduced – a ‘danger button’ has been installed in 500 Chennai Metro City Buses!
Similarly, other safety facilities such as CCTV cameras and safety equipment are installed on the buses. Nirbhaya Scheme Funds have been utilized for this purpose. These safety equipment are to be installed in 2800 buses.
A higher official of the Department of Transport shared in this regard: ‘The ‘Danger button’ once pressed, will send the alarm signal to the central control room in the Chennai Metro City Transport Office.
The CCTV cameras installed in the buses will be monitored 24-hours a day by a special squad. In case of any danger, it will send the alarm to the Police Department Help Number 100. Immediately, the police patrol vehicles will be sent to the dangerous spot.
There are many mobile Apps installed for the safety of women. But these take more time to act. Further, there is a cope for the culprit to escape even before the news reaches the relevant officers! However, the installation of the ‘Danger Button’ would facilitate very prompt action!”
