Veeranam water to quench Chennai thirst

Chennai is all set to receive 180 million litres per day (mlpd) of water from the Veeranam Lake within the next two weeks.

‘(We will) receive 180mld in the first week of August. (We) hope to cease pumping water from  borewells at Neyveli in Cuddalore once supply from Veeranam resumes… With Karnataka reservoirs brimming and Mettur expected to receive more from Tuesday evening, (we) are confident of water release from Mettur to delta in the coming week, which would reach Veeranam via Coleroon River in the downstream. The discharge of 3,000 cusecs for drinking water and intermittent rains have already made the river bed wet. Once released in large quantum for irrigation, the discharge will reach delta and from there to Veeranam soon with minimum loss due to evaporation and percolation’, said officials from Metro Water.
