If you are of the opinion that the students studying in the classes 10, 11 and 12 would not drop out from their schools, then this piece of information might surprise you.
In the academic year 2020-22, districts like Chennai, Chengalpet and Tiruvallur have recorded more number of school dropouts. The officers have mentioned that Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan or SSA has made its presence felt by its timely intervention and periodic survey etc resulting in the readmission of the students.
It is noteworthy that SSA under the school education department has managed to readmit 1.90lak students back to schools in India in the current academic year. Tiruvallur district reported the highest number of school dropouts with 16530 students. Next was Chengalpet with 10082 dropouts and was followed by Chennai with 9785 dropouts. The sensational piece of information is that the highest number of dropouts was from classes 10, 11 and 12 in Tamil Nadu.
It was later brought to light by an official data from SSA that in 39 districts in TN the highest number of school dropouts was from class111 with as many as 43058 students. As many as 5240 students from class10 have dropped out from their schools and 1115 students of class12 have dropped out.
In Chennai, a total of 2329 students have dropped out from their schools from classes 10, 11and 12 all the 3 above said classes. It must be noted that in Chengalpet a total of2234 students have dropped from their classes and in Tiruvallur a total of 4546 students have dropped out.
In the current academic year 2021-22, more than 5000 students have dropped out of their schools in districts belonging to Salem, Coimbatore, Villupuram, Krishnagiri etc.
According to an officer from SSA it was clear that from November 2021 itself dropout rates have been monitored and student’s attendance with drop out numbers in each district has been compared.
The students from economically poor backgrounds were forced to take up jobs to support their families. This was stated by Mr. Prince Gahendra Babu, an education activist. He added that Covid-19 induced lockdown was the main reason for these students to go for jobs instead of continuing their school studies. It must be taken into note that Chennai and its neighbouring places have many job opportunities and due to that many students would have migrated from the villages. Point is that certain districts in TN show higher numbers.
