Few decades ago, Kannapar Thidal was highly popular as it hosted many boxing matches. For 20 years, more than 100 families have been living in Chennai Corporation shelter in this place.
Now, TNUHDB or Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board and GCC are planning a tenement in Kannapar Thidal. Discussions have been held between TNUHDB and GCC regarding the land that is being maintained by the civic body.
According to an officer belonging to TNUHDB it was clear that the project was under discussion. He added that details regarding the number of apartments, floors, the extent of land that would be used etc would be decided only after discussions. Only after the completion of the project, details regarding how many families would be accommodated in the Kanappar Thidal tenements etc would be known. There are around 128 families that are already residing at Kanappar Thidal now.
It must not be forgotten that in the year 2002 that homeless families that were living on the pedestrian pavements of Raja Muthiah Road near Ripon buildings were evicted. These families were given a place to stay at the Kanappar Thidal.
It was mentioned by the government at that time that the families would be given new tenements inside Chennai but till now the promise hasn’t been fulfilled. It is known that the people in Kannappar Tidal have been making demands regarding permanent housing. Now, the development of building apartments here has come at this point of time. Now, TNUHDB (or TNSCB previously) have begun looking for suitable spaces in Chennai city.
