Unbelievable but true!!
The month will end today and there has been not a single hot day witnessed till now. It is well known to us that Chennai is known for its extreme hot days especially in the month of May. This year seems to be totally different with zero hot days reported in Chennai. It must be taken into note that in Chennai in this MAY temperatures did not cross 40 degrees Celsius to be called very hot
In Nungambakkam in Chennai, the temperature was above 39 degrees for the third consecutive day and it did not go above 40 degrees at all. In Meenambakkam in Chennai, the temperature went above 40 degrees just twice this 2022. Yesterday, Meenambakkam recorded a temperature of 39.5 degrees and Nungambakkam recorded 39.4 degrees. When compared to the Chennai city, temperature in Meenambakkam would increase because it will take one and half hours of time for the sea breeze to reach the place and this was as per some meteorologists.
Places like Paramathy, Vellore, Cuddalore and Thanjavur too experienced hot climate yesterday with temperatures in the 39 degrees Celsius. In June too, hot afternoons would be there in Chennai and this was as per the IMD. It also mentioned dry winds that would be responsible for hot afternoons for a few days. Till Wednesday, Chennai would have a maximum temperature of 39 to 40 degrees. Though Chennai citizens called the weather as hot and sultry this time the meteorological department officers have termed it as mild summer only this year.
There would usually be a sharp increase in the day temperatures in Chennai due to northwesterly the absence of strong north westerly winds have made the temperature not to go above 40 degrees Celsius this year. Thanks to Cyclone Asani, the temperature remained cool in Chennai for many days in May month. This was according to a senior meteorologist Mr. Y.E. A. Raj. In the years 1990, 2004 and in 2018, Chennai city did not witness hot weather.
Mr. Raj then spoke about how inspite of weather stations recording slightly above temperatures the Chennai residents might feel the weather as extremely hot due to high humidity levels and due to lack of clouds above. Information is that in 2017 Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 10 and 17 hot days respectively.
It is true that in Chennai summer doesn’t end with May month and even in June month also the weather might be very hot. This would be due to the prevalence of westerlies. Not many of us would be aware of the fact that in June month in 2019 Nungambakkam recorded 14 hot days. It is now said that such sultry conditions would be there till SW monsoon picks up speeds. Today, 31st May 2022, some places in Chennai might get scattered rains or thunderstorms triggered by connective activity.
There might be heavy rains in places like Salem, Namakkal, The Nilgiris, Perambalur etc today and truth is that scattered rains might t be there till 3rd of June 2022.
