To mark World Hepatitis Day that will be observed on Sunday, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital formally launched a liver clinic in the presence of health minister K.C. Veeramani. The liver clinic which began as part of the hospital’s gastroenterology department in 2006 was upgraded as a department in 2008 as its services were much sought. Under the Chief Minister’s health insurance scheme, of the 4,552 patients with liver disease registered for treatment, 4,248 have been treated. The department has earned Rs. 4.37 crores under the scheme. The money has been ploughed back into improving the facility
The college has started DM in hepatology (super specialty degree) at the Madras Medical College, to which the hospital is attached. Two students will be admitted from this academic year.
