In the future in Chennai, if you come across many sponge parks in every zone then don`t be surprised!!

The news that has come out now is that GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would transform 50 parks present in Chennai into sponge parks. These sponge parks would be able to store rain water run-off. It is revealed that GCC is also having plans of developing new parks in Chennai.

Every zone in Chennai would have atleast 2 sponge parks and the zonal officers have been asked to identify the parks that can be converted into sponge parks. This was according to a senior officer belonging to GCC.

It was later mentioned by a corporation officer that the parks would have harvesting structures to store run-offs during the rains. There would also be a percolation system in the parks and it would naturally filter water before it would go into the ground. To finalise the design and for preparing estimates etc, coordinating with various zonal officers and architects has been going on now.

It must not be forgotten in other parts of the world like in Manchester in England sponge parks are being used as a part of flood defence. In the flood prone places, these parks would act as sponge and would slow down the release of run-offs into the nearby SWD and limit the runoffs slowly. In addition, percolation also would be facilitated.

It is superb to note that Greater Chennai Corporation would also be developing 100 new parks and 50 playfields in Chennai and OSR land would be identified. These OSR lands would be developed and converted into parks later. This would be as a part of Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative. The project would be carried out at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crores.

As per an officer from GCC, The details about OSR lands have been coming in from various zones. Finalising the spots for developing and turning into parks or playfields etc would be carried out later on. This would be based on the local needs of the people. Based on the availability of OSR lands, the distribution of the parks would be done.

Point is that in the zones like Royapuram and Tondiarpet etc, the availability of OSR lands are less and in other zones multiple spaces are available and they could be converted into parks. Recently, GCC proposed to make OSR land details available on its website is known.
