House Surgeons, including students, of government medical college hospitals in Chennai protested near the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) on Monday. The surgeons and students of Stanley Medical College, Kilpauk Medical College and Madras Medical College protested that they end up doing the work of the paramedical staff. These protests have been ongoing for a while now.

‘Apart from doing work of others, we work continuously for 36 hours on admission days. From 7 am we work till the next evening 7 pm. We are too stressed out and that affects the quality of our work… This protest is basically to bring the issue to the notice of the chief minister. After a year or two, we will become interns and we too have to work continuously without even a day off… Instead of learning and going through case sheets of patients, (we) end up administering drugs and injections without even knowing the diagnosis of patients.  (On Monday) we formed a human chain and met the health secretary and health minister. The health secretary met the deans of medical colleges and finally the issue reached the DME. The DME is yet to talk about it… They fail to understand our problems. As we did not get any solution, we are planning to organise a massive protest in a couple of days and house surgeons across the medical colleges in the state will participate in it’, said interns and surgeons.
