Constructed to commemorate the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria, the Victoria Public Hall in Chennai is one of the finest British architecture in Chennai. This is making sensational news now.

The GCC would resume the work on restoration of this hall for attracting more tourists. Heritage conservation experts would be consulted regarding the restoration works of Victoria Hall.

It must not be forgotten that the restoration of this important heritage in Chennai began in the previous DMK government itself. The underground metro rail project near Central Square weakened the heritage structure and it led to delay in the project work.

A report has been submitted by a consultant to develop an art and heritage museum dedicated to Chennai in the building. An amount of Rs 26.27 crores would be spent for the restoration of this heritage building. Retrofitting would be carried out based on the recommendations of heritage conservation experts. Once when lightning of this building is installed, tourists would be permitted to enter the building in the evenings alone.

It is worthy to mention that GCC has installed dynamic lighting of Ripon Buildings on the same premises. In 2021, the state government had announced that the Victoria Hall would be restored. To strengthen the building, GCC would be adopting technology without compromising on the heritage value and architecture etc.

For preparing a detailed project report, GCC has called for the tender and heritage experts have been hired as consultants. Soon, the design and report would be submitted to the TN government for the final approval for taking up the restoration of Victoria Hall under Singara Chennai 2.0.

Few years back, a proposal for developing a town hall for discussing civic issues in the building was dropped and a final decision on the retrofitting of the heritage building. In this month, a final decision would be taken.
