Kings Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research or KIPMR located in Guindy in Chennai is about 123 years old and is making amazing news now!!
About 31 lakh samples have been tested by the Guindy based Kings Institute for Coronavirus infection till now. This famous lab has become the first in entire TN to initiate testing for Covid-19 samples are a well known fact.
The news now is that Kings Institute would test samples for Monkeypox also. Yesterday, the health minister of TN Mr. M. Subramaniam was busy inspecting several facilities at the Kings Institute.
It must be taken into account that clinical specimens collected from skin, lesions, urine, serum/plasma would be tested for Monkeypox at Kings Institute. To initiate the Monkeypox testing, ICMR/NIV Pune trained the laboratory along with the 15 facilities across India. This was as per the release.
It is learnt that all the samples would be referred through the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine or Regional Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme Network to KIPMR. It would be tested by real time PCR. Along with the sample to be tested, clinical history must also be available. The release hinted that parallel testing would take place in NIV Pune and the results would be out after getting confirmed by NIV Pune.
Across 77 countries, Monkeypox cases have been reported and till now 4 cases have been reported in India too. Till now, no Monkeypox cases has been reported in Tamil Nadu.
At the international airports, mass fever screening has been going on. It was mentioned by a n advisory that passengers from 77 countries must be tested without fail. These passengers have been screened for lesions etc.
It is worth mentioning here that the department of Virology at KIPMR is a World Health Organisation or WHO- National Polio Laboratory, a WHO reference lab for rubella and measles. This KIPMR is also an ICMR.DHR regional influenza referral lab also. Under ICMR/DHR, KIPMR also serves as a state level Virus Research and Diagnostic Lab.
Important personalities who made their presence felt were Health secretary, Mr. Senthil Kumar, DME Mr. Narayana Babu, DPH Dr. T. Selvavinayagam and KIPMR director Kaveri etc.
