On 7th August 2022, the third edition of Kalaignar Memorial International Virtual Marathon would take place at Marina Beach in Chennai. Yesterday, the registrations for taking part in this marathon were closed.
It is known that the registrations for this marathon opened on Thursday, 30th of June 2022 and the DGP of TN Mr. Sylendra Babu launched the website and the first registration was made in the presence of the health minister Mr. M. Subramaniam. For 4 categories from 42.2km to 5km, registrations were opened on 30th June. The marathon would witness different sections of people ranging from Defence and Naval officers to college students etc.
This event was held virtual till now and it would take place offline at marina Beach and the fee amount collected would be donated towards Egmore based Maternity and Children`s Hospital. It is sensational to mention that this marathon would have 40000 participants from across the globe and from 19 Indian states.
Information is that this upcoming marathon would be creating awareness regarding physical fitness as well as the well being of the people. Flagging of the marathon would be done by the minister for sports development Mr. Siva Meyyanathan and others like Mr. E.V. Velu, minister for public works, Mr. K.N. Nehru, minister for municipal administration and Mr. Udhayanidhi Stalin, youth wing secretary of DMK.
The winners from all the 4 categories would receive prize money of Rs 5 lakhs and it would be given by the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. This event would also witness many foreign ambassadors to India from countries like the USA, UK, France, Japan etc.
To encourage those who are taking part in this marathon, cultural rural arts performances like Urumimelam, Thumbiaatam & Pambai etc would be there. These would be arranged by the health department. The amount of Rs 80lakhs that was collected from the virtual marathon event (due to Coronavirus infection pandemic) in the last 2 years have been donated to the Covid relief fund. From 28 countries across the world and from various Indian states, more than 8500 people took part in the marathon in 2020 is known.
