The 2022 edition of the Madras Day celebrations would be sensational with heritage walks plus others like talks, competitions, quizzes etc. Point is that these events started on 1st of August and they would be there till early September.

Madras Day is celebrated on 22nd of August every year and in 2004 the idea of Madras Day was first suggested by a journalist from Chennai named Mr. Vincent D`Souza to Mr. Muthiah, historian. Since 2004, Madras Day has been held with exhibitions, quizzes, lectures, film screenings etc.

For the last 2 years 2020 and 2021 Madras Day was held virtually only due to the Coronavirus pandemic. There are many interesting events lined up for the Chennaites in 2022 for the special day.

As per Mr. Sashi Nair, journalist, the idea behind conducting Madras Day was to make the public know about the heritage of the city. He concluded that many people have been showing lots of interest and the popularity of the Madras Day has been growing.  Mr. V. Sriram, historian expressed his thoughts and spoke about how there are several positive aspects regarding Chennai to recognise and celebrate.

Various programmes:

In this year on the special day talks have been organised by Madras Musings and it would include tribute to legendary singer S.P. Balasubramaniam and conversation with Chess legend Mr. Manual Aaron. There would be a live music concert in the evening based on Tamil cinema.

The superb piece of news is that different organisations and several kinds of people would come together to host the events on the special day.

Chennai based Kreeda (that has been doing a superb work in the revival and preserving traditional games) would be hosting several programmes. There would be an online launch of video series about various games that were played at the temples belonging to Chennai. According to Vinitha Sidhartha, founder, a signature campaign named `preserve our games, protect our floors` would be launched and it would focus on the temples. She hinted that traditional games would be played in the parks in Chennai for 20 weeks. In September, there will be a heritage quiz for the school students from INTACH Chennai Chapter.
