Connecting Chennai with many southern districts, Perungalathur is an important place. It is revealed that Perungalathur is a nightmare for motorists and long distance commuters etc. Every day at Perungalathur, many vehicles are forced to compete with the speed of the pedestrians.
Few years back flyover construction was started here and it has been going on very slowly. It must be recalled that in the year 2011 the Highways department allocated Rs 86 crores for the flyover construction here and in 2022 the estimate of the project has gone more than Rs 200 crores. The work regarding flyover has come to a halt now in the last few weeks due to land acquisition issues. Truth is that the flyover is still incomplete.
There was some confusion regarding the location of this flyover after funds were allotted and this was according to some sources belonging to the Highways department. The level crossing LC32 was closed and the officers wanted to construct the flyover started at that place. It was in 2018 after 17 long years work regarding flyover construction began at Perungalathur with the project estimate of Rs 206 crores. It was mentioned that the work would be completed in 2 years of time.
In 2020, Coronavirus infection began to spread and the flyover construction work came to halt. The estimated cost rose to Rs 234 crores when the construction started again. The work was expected to be completed in 2021.Now in 2022, the flyover is just half completed and the deadline has been extended to 2023 by the officials. The delay in the flyover completion at Perungalathur has affected the commuters a lot.
It must be taken into note that the commuters commuting to Perungalathur, Peerkankaranai, RMK Nagar and Vandalur through GST Road have been finding it very tough. This is because of the fact that it is a sole entry point to Perungalathur due to the closure of the railway gate. The residents of Perungalathur and its nearby places would really feel delighted when the flyover construction at Perungalathur gets over fully. The need to have a flyover has become more now here.
The traffic congestion on the GST Road is extremely high and it would get reduced if the flyover is opened at Perungalathur. Now, the residents and commuters want the flyover construction work to be completed fast. Just a few weeks back, the flyover work was stopped due to some internal issues.
An official from the state Highways department mentioned Coronavirus pandemic as an excuse for the delay in the flyover works. He spoke about how many had to go to their native because of the pandemic. He concluded that the flyover work has been going on at brisk speed and it would be fully completed soon.
