Many motorists now are unhappy regarding the new roundtana that is coming up around the Periyar status on the Anna Salai in Chennai. The motorists want the size of the roundtana to be reduced as it was preventing the free traffic movement there.
The odd shape of the roundtana has been blocking the view of the vehicles coming from other directions. This was mentioned by a motorist who drives through Anna Salai frequently. He spoke about how the people coming from the Sivanandha Salai come to U-turn and they get confused about the correct way to proceed. In the past, the road used to be broad but now it has become narrow. The bridge coming ahead is also narrow and due to this driving to Pallavan Salai and Muthuswamy Salai has become difficult.
Accidents would take place again unless the roads leading to the junction were widened. This was brought out by a resident from West Mambalam who travels to Parry`s Corner regularly through this place. He threw light on the fact that people drive fast down Sivanandha Salai to Anna Salai.
It must be noted that 2 more roundtanas have been planned within 900m of this roundtana around Periyar statue on the Anna Salai. A retired engineer from the Highways department questioned the need for the 2 roundtanas here. He wanted the flow of traffic near Simpson to be studied well. Point is that there are 3 bus stops at the turning and in the peak hour`s buses and vehicles jostle for space because of the presence of the roundtana.
