On Sunday, as many as 2500 Vinayagar idols were immersed into the sea without any incident. There were lots of police personnel in all the 4 venues yesterday. It must be noted that the idol immersion event was held as part of Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations. There were 15000 police personnel and 2000 Home Guards who made the idols immersing event as an incident free one.
On Thursday, the police announced the 4 venues for immersing the Vinayagar idols installed in Chennai, Tambaram and Avadi Police Commissionerates. The 4 venues in Chennai were Pattinapakkam, Neelankarai, Kasimedu harbour and Tiruvottriyur etc.
To bring the Vinayagar idols from several places in Chennai to these 4 venues, the Chennai traffic police had issued a route map plus made the necessary traffic diversions etc. It was mentioned by a senior police personnel that 1962 Vinayagar idols were immersed into the sea.
In the beach at Pattinapakkam, 1243 Vinayagar idols were immersed and at Neelankarai beach 545 idols were immersed. As many as 163 idols were immersed at Kasimedu and 11 idols were immersed at Tiruvottiyur. A temporary control room was installed by the police department for the Vinayagar idol immersion. Fire extinguisher vehicles, ambulances, motor fixed boats and swimming volunteers were kept ready in these 4 venues to prevent incidents.
To promote communal harmony, the police department organised Samathuva Paillayar festival by installing Vinayagar idols at several places in Chennai city. This festival was held at Royapettah based Srinivasa Perumal Sannathi Street and Puzhal based Kavangari and R.K. Nagar based Nethaji Street etc.
