The officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) informed that a decision has been taken to stop all ongoing activities on the laying of new roads in Chennai Metro City until January 2023.

471 highways of 387 km and 34640 inner roads are being maintained by the Greater Chennai Corporation in Chennai Metro City.

Due to the persistent heavy downpour of rain during November last year, more than 1000 roads were damaged! A fund of Rs. 200 Crores was allotted to repair these roads under the Tamil Nadu Highways Infrastructure Project and the `Singara Chennai 2.0` Plan.

In this situation, it is expected that the Northeast rainy monsoon season will commence before the end of October.

As such, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has ordered that the activities of the rainwater drainage systems MUST be completed before 20th October.

Greater Chennai Corporation has further emphasized that in places where the rainwater drainage system activities have not been completed, care MUST be taken to ensure the rainwater does not stagnate in these places and also the motors MUST be kept READY for draining the stagnant rainwater.

As the northeast monsoon rainy season is set to commence, officials informed that the new road laying work and repairing of the old roads are stopped!

In this regard, GCC officials shared:

"The activities of the Rainwater drainage system, laying of electric cables by TANGEDCO, and the Chennai Metro Waterworks will require another 2 months to complete. As such, it has been emphasized to stop these activities before the onset of the northeast monsoon rainy season and do all the preventive and precautionary activities.

If the road repair work is continued, there are prospects of damage again during the monsoon rainy season! As such, road laying work of 50 km is presently taken up without causing any inconvenience to the citizens. The order has been given to complete this activity before 10th October.

Apart from the various activities, only the activity of repairing the damaged roads is allowed to continue based on `section repair` as `Badge Work`.

At the same time, the road repair activities are stopped until 31st December. Once the northeast monsoon rainy season is concluded, and the current ongoing work is completed, immediate action will be taken to resume and complete the road repair activities!"
