The heavens opened up on Monday afternoon after a few days of warm weather in Chennai.
The sudden heavy rains took the Chennaites by surprise and it resulted in heavy water logging on the roads in Chennai. The heavy rains caused havoc especially in those places where SWD works have been going on. During the afternoon on 26th September there was heavy rain all of a sudden and it lasted for an hour.
It is noteworthy that localities like Nungambakkm, Nandanam, Guindy, Pallikaranai/MRC Nagar/Taramani etc recored 3.1cm rains, 4cm rains, 3cms rains and 1cm rains respectively. In the northern part of Chennai there was water stagnation on the roidas especially in Royapuram.
Point is that many had to wade through water on the roads in Royapuram locality and it was not easy for many motorists and others . In Ramanujam Koodam Street in Royapuram, SWD works have started just recently. On the other side of Chennai city that is in southern parts like T. Nagar the sudden heavy rains had left many streets flooded. Motilal Street in T. Nagar was under water due to the rains and due to the SWD work many motorists found it difficult here. Many residents want the water stagnation issue to be resolved soon.
Till Thursday, there would be scattered rains across the state of Tamil Nadu and this was as per the prediction made by IMD. Till Wednesday, about 23 districts in Tn would receive rains and there would be light to moderate rains in Chennai with thunderstorms etc.
The sudden heavy rains yesterday in Tamil Nadu in many localities in Chennai was due to the cyclonic air circulation over west-central bay of Bengal in the lower tropospheric levels and due to associated trough over Tamil Nadu region. Accumulated heat over the last few days has led to connective activity and rains in Chennai and TN.
