Indian Institute of Technology Madras or IIT-M has conducted a study regarding the effectiveness of Covid vaccines against all the variants. The study has brought out that despite waning antibodies Covid19 vaccines continue to stop the virus. It must be noted that the Covoid19 vaccine triggers T cells, a part of the immune system that develops from the stem cells in the bone marrow.
It was later brought out by some scientists that the vaccines use harmless versions of spike-like structure on the surface of Covid-19 virus called as S protein. It is true that the proteins would be highly effective against multiple variants of Coronavirus such as Delta plus, Gamma, Omicron despite the compromised neutralising antibody response.
According to one of the authors of the study who is working as an assistant director with the department of biotechnology, IITM, Vani Janakiraman it was clear that more experiments would be needed for verification. She added that the present spike protein vaccinations are likely to be efficacious against the circulating variants of SARS CoV2. It must be noted that the results of the study have been published in the reputed peer- reviewed journal BBA- Molecular Basis of Disease.
Point is that the study was aimed to see if post vaccination infections were caused by a variant other than the original Wuhan virus strain incorporated in vaccine preparations. There are molecular level changes to the spike proteins in the variants of SARS CoV2 and these variants might include the regions of protein sequences that are recognised by Tcells known as epitopes.
